Cathy Lu Fruit Ceramics, $60

Cathy’s works for “Found In Chinatown” are inspired by practices in the Chinese community related to the spiritual afterlife. Throughout Chinatown, one can see small altars in many of the businesses, with fruits and various objects as offerings. Another source of inspiration was joss paper, also known as ghost money that is burnt in ceremonial offerings to family ancestors.

Working in sculpture, ceramics, and painting, Cathy Lu creates pieces that explore Asian American identity and culture. By manipulating traditional imagery of Chinese art and presentation, she explores the duality of what it means to be trans-cultural. She received her BA+BFA from Tufts University and her MFA in Sculpture from the San Francisco Art Institute. She lives and works in San Francisco. She currently teaches ceramics in the Bay Area.

This piece is a part of our current show “Found In Chinatown” and will ship after the show ends on 1/26.
